Calling all young writers!

JB Max Publishing is proud to support the Voice For The Horse First Annual Children's Writing Competition. JB Max president Jonathan Boudin, and Valerie Ormond, Author of Believing In Horses (published by JB Max) have volunteered to be on the judges' panel.

Langley, B.C. Canada – Oct 1, 2011 – The Voice For The Horse Foundation is hosting their 1st Annual Children’s Writing Competition this fall: Subject – Wild Horses. With curriculums for two different age categories 12 and under / 13 – 18 years of age, the writing competition offers a wide array of subject matter that will in fact intrigue the minds of all wild horse lovers alike.

The competition officially begins Oct 1, 2011 and runs through until Dec 31, 2011 but the organization began pre-launch activity early to provide time for further networking, development and research to be able to provide more information for potential additional sponsors and participants of this first time competition.

The writing competition was inspired by Atticus, the Wild Stallion from Deadman Valley, British Columbia, Canada who was captured in the winter of 2011 and rescued by CritterAid / Project Equus in the Interior of B.C. To create further awareness for the wild horse populations and the preservation of them across North America, Voice For The Horse contacted Saving America’s Mustangs where founder Madeleine Pickens responded with great enthusiasm for the project. Theresa Nolet from CritterAid / Project Equus has also equally embraced the program and its effort to bring about equine awareness to communities across the continent, to those both in and outside of the horse industry.

The competition provides a unique and free learning opportunity with the hope that children will have the ability to share their love for horses across North America through their writing.

Voice For The Horse is pleased to announce that the Grand Prize for the writing competition is “an experience of a lifetime” at the ISPMB (International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros) ranch in South Dakota, U.S.A. where Velma Johnson, affectionately known as Wild Horse Annie brought forth the passage of federal legislation in 1971 that gave protection to wild horses and burros on public lands from death and harassment. At the ranch located in a remote area in the center of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, the winner will enjoy mingling with four different wild horse herds, 12 cats, two dogs and an array of prairie dogs, red foxes, Golden Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks and more! The accommodations are at the main ranch house where meals will be prepared and the tours begin. This little get-away sounds like one of the best kept secrets in America!

What does the number 112,148 mean to you? 

Perhaps nothing. But to us, it means a great deal. In fact, the number is the ranking for Believing In Horses by Valerie Ormond on Amazon.com. 

At first glance, one might be surprised that such a number is a reason to celebrate - after all, there are a lot of digits between the number 112,148 and the number one. However, when you consider that our ranking is out of 6 million titles that people can buy on Amazon, and that we are a small fish going up against the well established barracudas in the publishing industry, it makes us want to put on our party hats and dance a jig!

Momentum is a curious thing. It can be like a snowball that accumulates mass and speed, or like a car that runs out of gas as it leaves the driveway. We are thankful that Believing In Horses has been our snowball, and thanks goes out to our readers for their never-ending support. A book can be well written and polished, but without readers there really would be no point. So thanks to you all!

Maryland author Valerie Ormond’s debut novel details the very real issue of the unwanted horse problem in the United States, and one girl’s commitment to saving a group of horses.  Although a work of fiction, many of the issues addressed are true to life.  According to the 2010 American Horse Publications survey, the issue of unwanted horses 
ranked number one in the area of concerns among horse people.

A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the non-profit organizations Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, in Calvert County, Md., and Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue, Inc., in  Prince George’s County, Md.  Both organizations supported the author’s 
research for the book and are active “horse savers.”

Jonathan Boudin, President of J.B.
